Barn Owl Class
Welcome to Our Barn Owl Class Page!
As our pupils prepare for the final term of their primary school journey, we have an exciting and thought-provoking curriculum planned. Here's a snapshot of what your child will be learning across the subjects this term:
English – Animal Farm
This term, we are delving into the classic allegorical novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. We will be exploring it through a Year 6 lens, focusing on the powerful themes of leadership, justice, and freedom.
Children will complete two main writing pieces:
- A short narrative, inspired by key events or characters in the story. Pupils will focus on building tension, using varied sentence structure, and developing character voice.
- A diary entry, written from the perspective of an animal on the farm. This will allow pupils to empathise with characters and explore themes such as loyalty, power, and rebellion.
We’ll also be engaging in rich discussion and vocabulary exploration to deepen comprehension and critical thinking.
Maths
Our maths learning this term is tailored to support every pupil in their transition to secondary school:
Mrs. Hase’s group will be introduced to key Year 7 topics. This will include working with algebraic expressions, negative numbers, coordinates in all four quadrants, and more advanced problem-solving strategies. This pre-teaching aims to boost confidence and ease the transition into secondary-level maths.
Miss Mutimer’s group will focus on securing and mastering Year 6 objectives, including ratio, percentages, geometry, and data handling. There will also be opportunities to deepen understanding through real-world investigations and reasoning challenges.
History – The History of Human Rights
In history, we will explore the development of human rights throughout history, beginning with key historical milestones such as the Magna Carta, the abolition of slavery, and women’s suffrage.
Pupils will examine:
- What rights people have fought for and why
- How events such as the World Wars shaped modern human rights laws
- The formation of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
This unit encourages critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper understanding of fairness and justice in our world today.
Geography – Globalisation
Our geography topic focuses on globalisation – what it is, how it affects our lives, and how the world is connected through trade, travel, culture, and technology.
Children will investigate:
- The journey of everyday items (e.g., chocolate, clothes) from production to our homes
- The role of multinational companies
- Environmental and social impacts of globalisation
- The positives and challenges of living in a connected world
This topic offers a fantastic opportunity to link geography with real-world issues and global citizenship.
Science – Reproduction
In science, we are learning about reproduction in animals and humans. This will include:
- Understanding the life cycles of different animals (mammals, birds, insects, and amphibians)
- Comparing sexual and asexual reproduction
- Exploring how plants reproduce, including pollination and seed dispersal
Art – Modernism and Beyond
Our art lessons will take pupils on a journey through Modernism and its influence on contemporary art. We’ll be exploring the bold and imaginative work of artists before examining how their ideas paved the way for more recent art movements.
Children will experiment with:
- Abstract and expressive painting
- Mixed media and collage
This unit encourages creativity, personal expression, and an appreciation of how art reflects and challenges society.
If you have any questions about the curriculum or how you can support your child at home, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re incredibly proud of all the hard work our Year 6 pupils are doing as they prepare for the next stage of their education.
