Woodpecker Class

Welcome to Our Woodpecker Class Page!

Welcome to Woodpeckers’ class page. We have an exciting and varied term ahead, packed with new topics, hands-on activities, and opportunities for the children to develop their skills and understanding across the curriculum. In this class, we all grow together!

English:

In English we will be continuing to read our class book The Enchanted Wood. We have made a good start with it so far and will continue to read it daily and answer questions in our guided reading sessions to help the children comprehend what is happening in the story. We will start by recapping the key grammar skills that we have learnt so far in year 2. The children will have the opportunity to put all of these skills into practise through a variety of writing tasks. Across our curriculum we will be writing letters, thinking about how characters feel and writing non-fiction pieces.

Throughout the term, we will continue to focus on improving our cursive handwriting, encouraging the children to use their joins confidently and consistently in all areas of their work.

Maths:

In maths we are going to be exploring a range of topics: measures, money, time and comparing data. When learning about measures and money, the children will learn to measure length, weight, capacity and temperature. They will also learn the value of coins and notes and learn how to make totals and give change. Our other topic is comparing data, the children will be able to understand and create pictograms, tally charts and bar graphs to interpret information.

Science:

Our science topic this term is astronomy and space. The children will be learning about the sun, moon and stars, understanding day and night and finding out about the planets in our solar system. It's a fascinating topic and we're looking forward to some creative and investigative activities to help bring space to life!

History:

In History we will be exploring powerful voices. This topic focuses on influential figures from the past and present who have made a difference to the world. Will be learning about inspiring individuals such as Rosa Parks, who stood up for equality and David Attenborough, whose work in nature conservation has reached people across the globe. Students will be challenged to think about the true meaning of some of the most famous speeches from these people for example the “I have a dream speech” powerfully delivered by Martin Luther King Jr.

RE:

In RE this term, we will be learning about the Khalsa and Sikh communities. The children will explore the story of how the Khalsa was formed and find out values and beliefs that are important to Sikh people. We will learn about symbols, traditions and places of worship, helping the children to develop respect and understanding for different faiths and ways of life.

Art:

In art, we will be getting creative with our topic murals and tapestry. The children will have the chance to experiment with different printing techniques and learn the basics of weaving. We're looking forward to seeing the wonderful designs they produce as they develop their skills in colour texture and pattern.

PSHE:

In PSHE, we will be covering the Key Stage 1 relationships and sex education in an age-appropriate way. Children will be learning about how humans grow and change over time: from babies, to toddlers, to children and then to adults. They will explore how babies grow inside the female body until they are ready to be born and think about how their needs have changed as they’ve grown. These important lessons will be focused on growth and development over time, handled sensitively and give the children opportunities to ask questions and share their thoughts in a safe and supportive environment.

PE:

Our PE this term will have a focus on sports day. We will be practicing many different activities throughout the term to build our resilience and sportsmanship for our sports day.

Music:

In music will be looking at emotions in sounds. The children will be listening and thinking about music by Anna Clyne, who composed a piece of music to represent a boat crossing a stormy sea. The children will be thinking about how we can create our own piece of music to represent a storm.

It promises to be a busy and exciting term, and we can't wait to see all the fantastic learning that will take place!
