Robin Class

Welcome to Our Robin Class Page!

English and Phonics

This term, we will be progressing through Units 10 and 11 of our Sounds-Write phonics program, focusing on the sounds sh and ch, as well as common exception words such as I, are, of, was, have, give, and more. The children will continue to bring home reading books to support their learning. We kindly ask that you read with your child daily to help reinforce their segmenting and blending skills.

Please ensure that children bring their books to school each day, so there is an opportunity for staff to read with them as well. Books will be changed weekly to allow children to build fluency and comprehension with each text.

Our focused literacy groups will continue to help children build simple words and sentences through various writing activities. These activities will be based around our topic of Kings and Queens, where we will explore related vocabulary, significant historical places connected to the monarchy, and stories about kings and queens. For example, we will read Paddington Goes to the Palace by Michael Bond.

Please continue to support your child by practising writing their name, letter sounds, and letter formation at home. We truly appreciate all the support you provide to help your child succeed!

Maths

This term in maths, we will be focusing on counting and ordering numbers up to 20, as well as exploring number patterns. We will practice counting forwards and backwards, which will help us add one more to a number and find missing numbers on a number line. We will also explore subtraction (take away) and how it affects numbers.

In shape work, we will rotate and manipulate shapes to see how they fit together, and we’ll discuss the arrangement of shapes based on our existing knowledge. We will also explore how 2D shapes can be combined to make 3D shapes and how 3D shapes can be broken down into 2D shapes.

We will explore the concept of sharing objects and use important mathematical vocabulary such as add, take away, group, rotate, compose, decompose, 2D shapes, and 3D shapes. We will also focus on understanding the concepts of one more and one less than a given number.

Please continue to practise number formation and recognition with your child at home.

Understanding the World

In Understanding the World will be on the Royal Family and exploring countries around the world where Queen Elizabeth is the monarch. We will also look at significant historical buildings from the past and discuss their importance.

In addition, we will be learning about the seasons of the year, specifically summer. The children will explore the signs of summer, including blooming flowers, warmer days, longer evenings, butterflies, bees, and birds. We will also spend time exploring our environment and understanding how it changes with the seasons.

PE

Our PE this half term will be focused on movement. We will develop the control and movement of our bodies in a variety of ways. Our P.E day will be Wednesday, children will need their P.E kits on this day. You can either take this each week or leave in school for the half term.

We will also discuss strategies to stay safe if they get lost and explore basic road safety skills. Additionally, we will work on identifying safer places to play, encouraging children to make smart choices when it comes to their personal safety.

Art

In Art, we will be learning about Louis Armstrong, focusing on his life as a trumpet player. Our Music and Dance sessions will be connected to the Carnival of the Animals, where children will explore music and dance inspired by the piece.

We will also study Henri Rousseau’s painting “Tiger in a Tropical Storm”, investigating his artistic techniques. Through hands-on activities, children will learn about primary and secondary colours by experimenting with colour mixing.

RE

In Religious Education, the children will learn about Jesus and his 12 disciples, focusing on how their friendship developed. We will explore the qualities that made their bond strong and how Jesus’s teachings can help us understand what makes a good friend.
