Wren Class

Welcome to Our Wren Class Page!

EYFS

Welcome to St John's Primary School, where you will start your exciting journey through school!

Whether you are feeling excited, nervous or possibly even upset about starting school, we can honestly say that you will have a brilliant and fun time learning new skills and knowledge that will make you become scientists, historians, geographers, artists, writers, story tellers and mathematicians. Our mixed EYFS and Year 1 classes provide a nurturing environment where your child can settle into school life alongside older children who are wonderful role models and supportive friends.

The first three weeks of this term, we will be getting to know each other and helping you settle in with the daily running of the school as well as supporting you to build new friendships. Once you have settled into your new school and class, we will start our learning adventure:

Literacy/Phonics:  Children will begin their phonics learning by focusing on the following sounds: <s><a><t><i><m><n><o><p>

Children will be looking at different fiction books with familiar settings and will orally retell these using their own words and recently introduced vocabulary. Children will have opportunities to mark make and focus on writing their name accurately and forming letters correctly.

Numeracy: Children will match and sort objects (identifying similarities and differences); Comparing size, mass and capacity; Make simple patterns (copy, continue and create).

Year 1

Maths –  In Year 1, we are recapping exploring number, specifically counting and the value of numbers. After this we will be learning about fractions and sharing objects/ amounts into equal amounts. In autumn 2, we will be using money to consolidate our numbers learning before moving onto multiplication and division.

We are learning to sequence a story and retell it using dictated sentences, to help us recap full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. We will then be moving onto Hansel and Gretel, learning to retell stories and write instructions. In Autumn 2, we will be reading Coming Home by Michael Morpurgo, again retelling the story focusing on the use of present tense and 1st person.

Guided Reading/ Phonics – In Guided Reading, we will be reading a selection of stories over the course of the Autumn term as a class. We will be learning the terminology of the vocabulary in the text and answering questions based on what is being said or done, with some prediction work to. Year 1 will do phonics daily to embed the initial code and bring in new extended code throughout the year, this will lead to the phonics screening check in the summer term.

In P.E. we will teach the children key aspects of P.E. and healthy lifestyles. We will be getting outside as much as possible, so please remember trainers and warm clothes as we get into the winter months.

Your child's P.E kit needs to include shorts/jogging trousers, P.E t-shirt and plimsolls. It is important your child has the correct footwear for PE as we will go on the field when the weather is nice. Please remember to tie long hair back, and remove all jewellery, including earrings. We are unable to remove any jewellery so either remove before attending school or ensure that your child can remove themselves.

These lessons will take place within our mixed tutor groups and adapted to meet the needs of all the learners.

R.E. –  In R.E. we are focusing on the story of Creation; specifically retelling the story and talking about what it means to us and Christians. In Autumn 2, we will be focussing on incarnation and look specifically at the birth of Jesus and what it means to us and Christians.
