Kingfisher Class

Welcome to Our Kingfisher Class Page!

English:

In English we will be continuing to read our class book King Arthur. We have made a good start with it so far and will continue to read it daily and answer questions in our guided reading sessions to help the children comprehend what is happening in the story. We will start by recapping the key grammar skills that we have learnt so far in year 2. The children will have the opportunity to put all of these skills into practise through a variety of writing tasks. We will be creating a fun and imaginative set of instructions on how to dress like a knight. Later in the term the children will also write a setting description using powerful vocabulary and descriptive techniques to bring their writing to life.

Throughout the term, we will continue to focus on improving our cursive handwriting, encouraging the children to use their joins confidently and consistently in all areas of their work.

Maths:

In math’s we are going to be exploring two topics: measures and money and comparing data. When learning about measures and money, the children will learn to measure length, weight, capacity and temperature. They will also learn the value of coins and notes and learn how to make totals and give change. The other topic is comparing data, the children will be able to understand and create pictograms, tally charts and bar graphs to interpret information.

Science:

Our science topic this term is astronomy and space. The children will be learning about the sun, moon and stars, understanding day and night and finding out about the planets in our solar system. It's a fascinating topic and we're looking forward to some creative and investigative activities to help bring space to life!

History:

In History we will be exploring powerful voices. This topic focuses on influential figures from the past and present who have made a difference to the world. Will be learning about inspiring individuals such as Rosa Parks, who stood up for equality and David Attenborough, whose work in nature conservation has reached people across the globe. Students will be challenged to think about the true meaning of some of the most famous speeches from these people for example the “I have a dream speech” powerfully delivered by Martin Luther King Jr.

RE:

In RE this term, we will be learning about the Khalsa and Sikh communities. The children will explore the story of how the Khalsa was formed and find out values and beliefs that are important to Sikh people. We will learn about symbols, traditions and places of worship, helping the children to develop respect and understanding for different faiths and ways of life.

Art:

In art, we will be getting creative with our topic murals and tapestry. The children will have the chance to experiment with different printing techniques and learn the basics of weaving. We're looking forward to seeing the wonderful designs they produce as they develop their skills in colour texture and pattern.

PSHE:

In PSHE, we will be covering relationships and sex education in an age-appropriate way. Children will be learning about how humans grow and change over time: from babies, to toddlers, to children and then to adults. They will explore how babies grow inside the female body until they are ready to be born and think about how their needs have changed as they’ve grown. These important lessons will be handled sensitively and give the children opportunities to ask questions and share their thoughts in a safe and supportive environment.
