Online Safety

At St John’s C of E primary we are committed to nurturing our pupils in a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment — both offline and online.

As digital technology becomes an increasingly central part of our children’s lives, we recognise the vital role that online safety plays in our safeguarding responsibilities. We aim to equip our pupils with the behaviours, knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.

Online safety is a shared responsibility. That’s why we aim to work in close partnership with parents, carers, and the wider school community to ensure that our children can explore, learn, and communicate online with care and caution.

How we teach online safety at St John’s

At St John’s, we believe that teaching online safety is a vital part of preparing our children for the modern world. We approach this in a variety of ways, through both explicit and implicit learning opportunities. Children take part in dedicated Computing and PSHE lessons that focus on digital safety, where they are taught key skills for navigating the online world responsibly and respectfully.

In addition to these focused sessions, we weave online safety themes throughout our wider curriculum — particularly within PSHE. As children gain increasing independence in their digital lives, we ensure they are regularly encouraged to reflect on safe behaviours. For example, when discussing personal safety, we don’t just talk about staying safe near water or in public places, but also how to stay safe online and the importance of turning to trusted adults when they feel unsure or uncomfortable.

Our goal is to create thoughtful, informed, and responsible digital citizens who are prepared for the wider world.

Technology opens up a world of opportunities for our children — to learn, create, and connect. But with these opportunities come responsibilities. By working together, parents and teachers can guide children to use technology safely, respectfully, and wisely. Together, we can build a strong foundation for safe and confident digital explorers.
